Preparing for a Yoga Retreat: What to Pack, Expect, and Leave Behind

Preparing for a Yoga Retreat What to Pack, Expect, and Leave Behind

There’s something magical about stepping away from your routine to immerse yourself in practice but if you’ve never been on a retreat before, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement, nerves, and “what on earth do I pack?”

Here’s a little guide to help you prepare your body, mind, and suitcase.

What to Pack (Beyond the Obvious)

  1. Light, breathable clothing
Think yoga-friendly layers, loose linen, swimwear, and a shawl or wrap for evenings.
  2. Natural sun protection & insect repellent
Sri Lanka is warm and tropical – opt for reef-safe and skin-friendly options.
  3. Journal & pen
You’ll want to reflect, release, or capture insights – especially during rituals or meditations.
  4. Comfort items
Essential oils, skincare or anything that feels like home.
  5. Open space in your bag
Trust me , you’ll want room for a few local treasures on your way back.

What to expect

  • Daily movement & stillness
From dynamic flow to yin and yoga nidra, your body will be held in both strength and softness.
  • Workshops that educate & empower
Expect sessions on massage, nutrition, backbends, breath, and more.
  • Delicious, nourishing meals
You’ll be fuelled by food that’s made with love – colourful, grounding, and nourishing. At my upcoming Tattva retreat the menu is entirely plant-based & is known for its award-winning vegan cuisine, and every meal is part of the experience.
  • Down time to just be
There’s plenty of space to rest, journal, swim in the pool, nap in a hammock, or head to the beach (just 10 minutes away). This isn’t about filling every minute – it’s about giving your system space to exhale.
  • The chance to try something new
Whether it’s exploring creative movement, trying local flavours, or learning to surf – you’ll have space to explore. A free surf lesson is included in my upcoming Tattva retreat if you’re feeling adventurous (and supported by the sea).
  • Real connection
With others, with nature, and with yourself. The group is small and intentionally held – so you’re never lost in a crowd, and always invited to show up as you are

what you should leave behind

  • Comparison
You don’t need to be the bendiest, calmest, or most “experienced” one there. Come as you are.
  • Shoulds
This is not a retreat of pressure or performance. It’s about honest presence.
  • Too-tight expectations
Let the week unfold. Let your body surprise you. Let your nervous system exhale.
